Things we Know

In 2005, Science magazine identified 125 "big questions" that scientists have yet to answer, representing a sampling of major mysteries rather than a complete inventory. Modern astronomy often notes that 95% of the universe is made of dark matter and dark energy, which are currently unobserved—suggesting that the vast majority of "fundamental" questions about the composition of reality are still unanswered.

I have many questions about many things. Curiosity can stir my suspicions about space, areas of science, politics, philosophy, and assumptions about versions of history. There are plenty of talking heads pontificating about any number of issues, but how important are they for my life today? Not every question is as relevant to our lives today or in light of eternity. There are some things we simply know or can know.

In the letter of 1 John (5:18-21), the author John mentions four things "we know." These four truths deal with who we are, where we are from, and who God is. In these statements, John shares what should be considered settled knowledge for any believer. These are things we can know. In a world full of questions, we should welcome some answers.
