Discernment?
Many have described our current age as Post-Truth. Oxford Dictionary defines Post-Truth as "Relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief." This may sound normal, but it is an alarming shift in culture with dangerous consequences. Unfortunately, this accurately explains our day, with public opinion being shaped not by facts but by emotionally charged appeals shaping personal beliefs.
According to Noah Webster (1829), truth is defined by “Conformity to fact or reality; exact accordance with that which is, or has been, or shall be…We rely upon the truth of the scriptural prophecies.” Truth is not the trophy of the most emotional appeals of our current moment. Truth is defined by fact and reality.
There are 2 great challenges we (Christians) are facing today:
The myth that truth is not absolute but personal and relative. Post-truth
A Crisis of True Faith in Churches today. 1 JN 2:19
“Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the truth, we cannot know it” (Blaise Pascal (1623-1662 AD).
This Sunday, we will look at 1 John 4:1-6. John reminds us of the importance of discernment in the fight for truth and preservation against false teaching and lies that can easily wreak havoc among churches and in the lives of believers.
