Joy Revealed

Dec 25, 2022    Pastor David Anglin

"And the angel said to them, 'Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." -Luke 2:10-11 (ESV)

According to Luke's research into the exact account of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus, there were only a few present in the initial hours surrounding His birth. Their reactions and responses serve as a guide to help us examine our own hearts and asses our spiritual lives.

In Luke 2:18-19 we read,

"And all who heard it wondered

at the things which were told them by the shepherds.

But Mary treasured all these things,

pondering them in her heart."

Many were amazed at the story of the birth of Jesus and may have been moved to wonder about it. But, like three of the four soils (Luke 8) their wonder is snatched away, overwhelmed by the heat of the day's challenges, or choked out by the world's allurement.

In contrast, we find Mary treasuring and pondering. Mary is trying to understand all that God is doing and resting in amazement as she witnesses the fulfillment of thousands of years of God's promises. We also see the shepherds worshiping as they return to their sheep, sharing the great news with all who will listen. For on that day in Bethlehem was born the lamb of God, who would take away the sins of the world.
